However, as sweet as this sounds, you have a much lower allowance than before. At 8p a text, they may be cheaper when compared to other UK mobile phone networks, but £15 of balance only gives you 187 texts if you don’t use any other services that cost, like calling. Previously, you were getting 217 texts. On the other hand, you do get more minutes, a total of 62.5 minutes (at 24p per minute) to be precise. If we were to use the current rates on the old plan, we would get a balance of £27.68 (calculated (8p * 217 text) + (43 minutes * 24p)). A loss of £12.68 balance. Which in turn for them is a lower cost of operating their business.

In conclusion, this change will only benefit people who are only using minutes, which to my knowledge are a minority, but nearly everyone will enjoy the extra freedom. The majority of Blyk users are texters and they will suffer. I definitely believe something should be done about this. For example, doubling the allowance of £15 to £30 and/or lower the text and calling costs. Maybe, it’s time to switch network, only time will tell.

A word of advice, it looks much better on Windows Vista and when it is maximised. You might also want to enable the Home button and keep the bookmarks toolbar visible at all times.

One thing I absolutely hate is when you install the product, it adds a startup entry of GoogleUpdate.exe. So each time your computer starts it runs the exe and it never shuts down. It also does not install in the Programs Folder like normal software programs, but instead at C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Local on Windows Vista.

I know that this is beta software, so this may change when the final product is out, but Google don’t add files or services to our startup list, no matter how small. You don’t see Mozilla Firefox doing that.

Overall, it is a very good web browser, but too simple for my liking. It’s hard to keep lots of bookmarks and it doesn’t support RSS yet, but it is very fast. It is also supposed to be more efficient then other web browsers in the way it handles processes and threads. I would not recommend it for daily use just yet. A lot of sites that use advanced JavaScript functions have problems e.g. the new Facebook, so many features to do work, like joining a new group or deleting a comment.

Other sources have also reported that there will be a 160GB PS3 for North America. This will include Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, PLAYSTATION Network Voucher for PAIN and a DUALSHOCK3 Wireless Controller.

This has come as a complete surprise as the new 80GB PAL PS3 is due to release this Friday (22nd August). Too bad I have already ordered my 80GB PS3. I might have waited for the 160GB version, but then they may have announced another one. You can always change the HDD to a higher capacity one on your own.

I tried looking on the official UEFA Euro 2008 website and could not find a Excel match schedule and scoresheet like the one from the World Cup 2006 website. So I have found you an unofficial Excel spreadsheet which you can use as a match schedule and scoresheet for the UEFA Euro 2008. All the dates and times should be correct when you adjust them for your time zone.

This template is equipped with formulae that will automatically calculate the group standings of each team, based on Euro 2008 match regulations. When all group matches have been played, the template will automatically put each group winner and runner up in the template and you just simply put the score in the correct score cells. The formula will continue to work until the champion is revealed.

Virgin Media will double the number of hours it throttles the bandwidth of customers who hammer its network day and night, changes to its traffic management policy have revealed.

The tightened regime means that between 10am and 3pm subscribers to its “M”, “L” and “XL” packages will have their connection throttled for five hours if they download more than their full speed ration.

Almost ten months after launching their season with a penalties victory over Chelsea FC, Manchester United FC repeated the feat in the UEFA Champions League final with Edwin van der Sar saving from Nicolas Anelka to take the trophy to Old Trafford for the third time.

High drama
United had prevailed 3-0 in the FA Community Shield shoot-out on 5 August after a 1-1 draw and were on course to be crowned European champions again when Cristiano Ronaldo headed them into a 26th-minute lead. Chelsea equalised 19 minutes later through Frank Lampard and appeared more likely to find a winner thereafter, Didier Drogba and Lampard striking the woodwork. The former became the second player in three years to be red-carded in a final for slapping Nemanja Vidić in extra time, yet Petr Čech’s save from Ronaldo’s penalty put the trophy within reach of the ten men only for captain John Terry to fire wide the potentially clinching kick. Three conversions later, Van der Sar outwitted Anelka and United were celebrating again.

Crossing chances
With the teams having the best two defences in this season’s Premier League it was perhaps little surprise both began cautiously, although Nemanja Vidić was twice forced to head clear promising left-wing crosses into the United goalmouth while Owen Hargreaves was a lively presence down United’s right flank. The England midfielder gave his international team-mate Ashley Cole – fully recovered from an ankle injury suffered in training on Tuesday – a testing early examination, delivering two dangerous balls into the area and almost getting on the end of Ronaldo’s left-wing centre.

Ronaldo delight
From the Portuguese international’s second significant contribution of the evening, United were ahead. Right-back Wes Brown played a one-two with Paul Scholes on the right touchline and cut inside to deliver a deep cross to the far post, where Ronaldo peeled away from Michael Essien to nod his first goal against Chelsea just inside Petr Čech’s right-hand post. Michael Ballack drove over from the edge of the box as Chelsea sought an instant response, but at the half-hour mark the London club had managed just 38 per cent of the possession.

Lampard leveller
For all that, however, United’s lead might have disappeared almost as soon as it had arrived but for the reflexes of the 37-year-old Edwin van der Sar. The goalkeeper made an instinctive save from point-blank range to keep out Rio Ferdinand’s inadvertent header under pressure from Ballack yet Chelsea could have fallen two behind within seconds. Wayne Rooney’s fabulous long pass launched a counterattack from which Čech made fine stops to deny first Carlos Tévez’s header then Michael Carrick’s follow-up shot. Tévez next passed up another presentable opening from Rooney’s low right-wing centre and Chelsea took advantage on the stroke of half-time. Lampard reacted quickest to slip the ball beyond Van der Sar after Essien’s speculative long-range effort had struck both Vidić and Ferdinand.

All change
Having got back into the game, Chelsea were eager to build on their equaliser as the second half started and might have been in front within ten minutes as Florent Malouda set Essien away down the right. The Ghanaian expertly turned away from two defenders on the edge of the area, only to direct a left-foot attempt too high, before Ballack sliced wide from distance as the United defence parted invitingly. The German and his midfield partner Lampard were steadily growing in influence, the latter demanding that first Vidić then Ferdinand clear away promising balls into the box.

Off the post
Before kick-off, the United end of the ground had displayed a series of cards spelling out one simple message – Believe – with the ‘i’ replaced by an image of the European Champion Clubs’ Cup. That conviction now seemed exclusively Chelsea’s, however, and they came closer than ever to a second goal with 12 minutes left as Didier Drogba, out of nothing, curled a shot from 25 metres beyond Van der Sar but off the goalkeeper’s left-hand upright.

Extra-time tension
Ryan Giggs came on after 87 minutes to make his record-breaking 759th United appearance, yet with tension setting in neither side was willing to risk defeat and commit men forward. Chelsea continued to look more enterprising in the initial exchanges of extra time and rattled the woodwork again as Ashley Cole and Ballack brilliantly set up Lampard for an improvised shot that came back off the bar with Van der Sar beaten. John Terry then blocked Giggs’s goalbound strike after Patrice Evra’s low cross had taken Čech out of the game. The ebb and flow of attacks continued, with the only advantage gained being United’s after Drogba was dismissed for slapping Vidić.

The former Wales winger appeared in his 758th game for Manchester United, tying the record set by Bobby Charlton four decades ago. Giggs can break the record if he plays in United’s May 21 European Champions League final against Chelsea in Moscow.

The 34-year-old has been a part of each of United’s 10 league championships under Coach Alex Ferguson and also has seven more winner’s medals from other tournaments.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored United’s first goal, his 41st of the season in all competitions, and Giggs added another goal after coming in as a second-half substitute.

Here is something interesting. For the last 8 football seasons, every time Manchester United has won it so have Real Madrid, every time Chelsea has won it so have FC Barcelona and Arsenal with Valencia CF.

Not long after (maybe a month, or two) Sony replaced the 60GB European PS3 with a lower-class 40GB PS3 that completely removed PS2 backward compatibility by removing the “Graphics Synthesizer” GPU, the last of the PS3 hardware. This new “downgrade” also removes the flash card readers, SACD support as well as lowering the number of USB 2.0 ports to 2 from 4.

I then heard rumours that there was a 65nm PS3 being developed. This means a small and less power hungry Cell and RSX chip. This in turn would make the PS3 run a lot cooler. I also heard rumour of DUALSHOCK3 coming to the PS3, which is basically the SIXAXIS with rumble. So I decided to wait (again) for them both.

Currently, I believe you can get the PS3 with the 65nm Cell microprocessor, but I think that the power hungry RSX chip is still at 90nm. Recently, IBM announced that they will soon move the console chip onto the company’s much-ballyhooed, next-generation 45nm high-k process. There are various advantages for this. The SIXAXIS is no longer being produced and being replaced by the new DUALSHOCK3 controller as we speak. All retail packages will include one or two SIXAXIS controllers and/or a DUALSHOCK3 controller beginning on June 12, 2008.

So Sony, when are you going to release the 80GB PS3 with the 45nm Cell microprocessor, 65nm or lower RSX GPU, flash card readers, SACD support and at least 4 USB 2.0 ports? And don’t forget, I will be waiting.

Update 1: Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai has confirmed that PS3 Cell processors manufactured since last holiday use the more efficient 65nm technology, while smaller RSX chips are due in the fall (autumn).

Update 2: It seems Sony will be releasing an 80GB PS3, arriving in Europe, the UK, Middle East, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand on August 27 (with Russia to follow two weeks later). The 80GB PS3 will cost €399 in Europe and £299 in Britain. However, it will only be the “core” version, meaning that it lacks backward compatibility and other premium features above. It looks like we may never get backward compatibility with the PS1 and PS2 back.

Sony what the hell are you playing at! We all want the premium version back, with backward compatibility, 4 USBs, flash card readers, etc.

Update 3: The release date for the 80GB PS3 has been moved from 27th to 22nd August. I’ve ordered mine, even though it has missing features compared to the first PS3s that came out. Also, Play.com are offering a few select platinum titles and Blu-ray titles 2 for £25. Yeah that’s £12.50 each! I ordered Resistance: Fall Of Man and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

Update 4: 160GB PlayStation 3 Announced for Europe and North America

Update 5: It seems the new 80GB “Core” has minimal power savings over the old 40GB “Core”, might have 65nm RSX GPU.

Regular users will be able to download the file April 29th (next Tuesday) when XP SP3 final is expected to be released to Microsoft Downloads i.e. to the manual updates. Microsoft planned to post the patch to its paid services for professionals, MSDN and TechNet, on May 2nd, after the regular users ;-). But after many of them became upset, Microsoft changed its mind and the patches have already appeared on MSDN and TechNet (on Tuesday). In June, Microsoft will push the pack through the automatic updates.

The SP3-updated XP have various subtle improvements, including one that is interesting for physicists – detection of black hole … routers. ;-) There are many early users who argue that SP3 brings an approximate 10% performance boost.

If you have XP SP3 beta/RC build 3300 or newer, you don’t have to uninstall it. You can upgrade to XP SP3 directly, assuming that you have the SP3 final file. ;-)

While there has been some limited interaction between management of our two companies, there has been no meaningful negotiation to conclude an agreement. We understand that you have been meeting to consider and assess your alternatives, including alternative transactions with others in the industry, but we’ve seen no indication that you have authorized Yahoo! management to negotiate with Microsoft. This is despite the fact that our proposal is the only alternative put forward that offers your shareholders full and fair value for their shares, gives every shareholder a vote on the future of the company, and enhances choice for content creators, advertisers, and consumers.

During these two months of inactivity, the Internet has continued to march on, while the public equity markets and overall economic conditions have weakened considerably, both in general and for other Internet-focused companies in particular. At the same time, public indicators suggest that Yahoo!’s search and page view shares have declined. Finally, you have adopted new plans at the company that have made any change of control more costly.

By any fair measure, the large premium we offered in January is even more significant today. We believe that the majority of your shareholders share this assessment, even after reviewing your public disclosures relating to your future prospects.

Given these developments, we believe now is the time for our respective companies to authorize teams to sit down and negotiate a definitive agreement on a combination of our companies that will deliver superior value to our respective shareholders, creating a more efficient and competitive company that will provide greater value and service to our customers. If we have not concluded an agreement within the next three weeks, we will be compelled to take our case directly to your shareholders, including the initiation of a proxy contest to elect an alternative slate of directors for the Yahoo! board. The substantial premium reflected in our initial proposal anticipated a friendly transaction with you. If we are forced to take an offer directly to your shareholders, that action will have an undesirable impact on the value of your company from our perspective which will be reflected in the terms of our proposal.

It is unfortunate that by choosing not to enter into substantive negotiations with us, you have failed to give due consideration to a transaction that has tremendous benefits for Yahoo!’s shareholders and employees. We think it is critically important not to let this window of opportunity pass.

To benefit from this, append &fmt=18 to the end of a video URL to get 480×360 video with higher quality audio. Or append &fmt=6 and get 448×336 video, with 44100 Hz audio. However, not all videos will work. Newer ones are most likely to work, as the source file is there so it can be converted.

One video I did notice that does have the higher quality video is the “One Peg More” video by Gop Virk & Laddi Bath.

If you are embedding the videos and want the higher quality version, add “&ap=%2526fmt%3D18″ after the video URL in both places in the embed code (or “&ap=%2526fmt%3D6″ for the non-MP4 high quality version).

You can also download these videos using KeepVid appending the code at the end of the download URL. I downloaded all three versions, the standard version is 8.59 MB, the MP4 version is 16.4 MB and the non-MP4 high quality version is 24 MB, the largest of the lot.

From looking at just this example, I noticed that the non-MP4 high quality version has got clearer images than the MP4 version, despite it having a higher resolution, but this may not be true for all videos. It could be because I was using QuickTime to view the MP4, and YouTube for the others. I could be wrong. Try it out, and tell me what you think.

UPDATE: I have noticed that more videos work with the MP4 version trick. And it also seems that despite being higher quality these videos are still in mono not stereo sound.

UPDATE 2: YouTube has added a “Video Playback Quality” option in “My Account” settings. From here you can choose to “always play higher-quality video when it’s available”.

If you’ve installed software by Apple such as iTunes, software by Adobe such as Premiere Pro, Photoshop CS2, Dreamweaver CS3 the chances are there’s already a Bonjour folder in your Program Files. This service starts automatically and runs a process named mDNSResponder.exe which cannot be ended by Windows Task Manager. If you do not want Bonjour to be in your computer and want to uninstall it, sometimes you can’t find any uninstaller for it! Even if you go to Control Panel’s Add or Remove Program, you can’t find the uninstaller there as well.

Here’s how to safely uninstall and remove the Bonjour service and files (mDNSResponder.exe and mdnsNSP.dll). Just follow the few simple steps below to remove Bonjour from your computer.

Warning: iTunes and some other programs need Bonjour to function. In which case do not remove!

NOTE: Make sure you have administrator privileges before executing these commands. You might have to delete the quotes and input them manually, because WordPress.com is outputting them as smart quotes.

1. Go to [Start > Run] and type the following command and hit OK.
   • “%PROGRAMFILES%\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe” -remove
2. Go to [Start > Run] again and type the following command and hit OK.
   • regsvr32 /u “%PROGRAMFILES%\Bonjour\mdnsNSP.dll”

After you restart, you can safely delete the Bonjour folder without errors.

To know if you have actually uninstalled Bonjour. Open services.msc and see if there is a service similar to: “##Id_String2.6844F930_1628_4223_B5CC_5BB94B879762##”. If it is not there, then it has been uninstalled. But the folder and files remain in the program files folder. Just in case you want to install it again.
